Understanding Yoga

About Yoga

The ancient practice of uniting mind, body, spirit, and consciousness

The Meaning of Yoga

The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit, meaning “to unite,” and as such it encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual practices aiming to alleviate suffering and attaining spiritual enlightenment by aligning mind, body, spirit, and consciousness.

It is aimed at moving one into experiencing harmony within their mind and body. While Hindu traditional yoga emphasizes meditation and modern iterations often prioritize physical postures, Kemetic origins move one to the elevation of consciousness that allows one to ascend into their highest realm of themselves and to have the greatest expression of their true essence.

Whereas postures are very much a part of Kemetic Yoga, the intention is that the postures allow one to have an experience where their Chi or essence has an experience of elevation. The postures allow one to release the resistance that can decrease mobility both physically and spiritually.

Historical Truth

Afrikan Origins of Yoga

Tracing the ancient roots of yoga to the continent of Afrika

Yoga is Out of Afrika

It is important to note that the origins of yoga can be traced to the continent of Afrika. Whereas one can find evidence of Indian Yoga in ancient Egypt (Kemet), examples of ancient Egyptian (Kemetic) Yoga cannot be found in India, suggesting that the Yoga of Egypt (Kemet) is older than that found in India.

When one examines the historical records, one finds that the original people of India, as did all people of the world, migrated out of northeastern Afrika where Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia are presently located and settled in the valley of the Indus River.

The original civilization of India began under the guidance of a people called Dravidians. The Dravidians were Afrikans who built great cities, cultivated the land, and lived peacefully and in harmony with nature.

The descendants of these original people of India can be found today in places like Orissa, India, where they appear more like their cousins in western Afrika than the later multi-ethnic variations that currently populate India. This suggests that Yoga is out of Afrika.

The Practice

Kemetic Yoga Practice

A system inspired by ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs combining movement, breath, and meditation

What is Kemetic Yoga?

Kemetic yoga is a system of yoga that involves a combination of physical movements, deep breathing techniques, and meditation. Developed in the 1970s, this form of yoga was inspired by ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs or medu neter.

It has an emphasis on breathing patterns and inculcates the philosophies of self-development, healing of mind-body-spirit, and self-discovery.

A Yoga enthusiast from Chicago, Asar Hapi, shared the practice of Kemetic yoga by traveling across the United States, while yoga master Yirser Ra Hotep trains and certifies instructors, teaching them forms of Kemetic Yoga.

This form of yoga focuses on the movement of energy through the body in order to connect with one’s higher intelligence and the Divine. Kemetic yoga is practiced at an intentional pace while placing more focus on meditation and the chakras (energy centers).

Key Elements of Kemetic Yoga

Deep Breathing Techniques

Emphasis on breathing patterns to activate energy flow and promote relaxation throughout the body

Chakra Activation

Focus on energy centers (chakras) along the spinal column to enhance spiritual awareness and vitality

Spinal Alignment

Emphasis on alignment of the vertebral column to facilitate proper energy flow and physical health

Intentional Pace

Practiced at a slower, more intentional pace than common asana classes for deeper connection

Meditation Focus

Greater emphasis on meditation and inner awareness to connect with higher intelligence

Hieroglyphic Inspiration

Postures and movements inspired by ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs (medu neter) and temple art

Understanding Chakras

Chakras, which means “wheel,” are energy centers found throughout the body. The most common chakras are found along the spinal column within the body. With Kemetic Yoga, there is an activation or awareness of the chakras and spirit energy flow throughout the body. It places emphasis on alignment of the vertebral column of the spine.

Benefits of Kemetic Yoga

Experience profound psychospiritual and physiological transformation

Holistic Healing & Wellness

There are many psychospiritual and physiological benefits of yoga. Not only can it promote self-empowerment and mental clarity, but it also enhances one’s confidence to traverse through adversity by teaching one to be flexible and adaptable, and to discern what is real and what are mental illusions.

Many of the challenges in life, such as racism and oppression, are mere illusions. What is salient is that one is connected to the Divine Source of all things and therefore does not need to become dismayed by the obstructions created by another human. It is one’s response to the illusions that often creates ill-health and faulty thinking.

Yoga reduces stress by activating the relaxation response in the central nervous system. When we are under stress, the sympathetic nervous system is activated, which creates a “fight or flight” condition in which blood pressure rises, muscles tighten up, fats are released into the bloodstream, blood flow is routed away from internal organs, and the heart rate increases rapidly.

People who do not know how to respond to stressful situations can turn to drugs, overeating, alcohol, emotional outbursts, abusive behavior, and many other negative responses as a consequence. Kemetic Yoga provides a healthy alternative.

Yoga has been found to increase levels of GABA or gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brain (Streeter et al. 2010). GABA is an inhibitory chemical messenger in your brain that is known for producing a calming effect.

This neurochemical enhancement helps regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and promote overall mental wellness, providing scientific validation for the profound benefits practitioners experience through Kemetic Yoga.
